What Is Denture Stabilization?

Traditional dentures are designed to rest on top of the gums. Natural suction or a bit of adhesive helps them stay in place. While that works for some patients, others find that their dentures are never quite as sturdy and stable as they would like. For example, you may find that your denture often slips out of place or that it frequently sems to lift on one side.
Denture stabilization seeks to address such issues. We place a small number of dental implants into your jawbone, where they will bond with the surrounding tissue. Your denture can then attach to them, meaning it should stay in place reliably throughout the day, even when you are eating relatively tough or chewy foods.
The Denture Stabilization Process

To get started with denture stabilization, we will have to thoroughly examine your mouth. Your jawbone should be strong enough to support dental implants, and you should be free of conditions like gum disease, which could compromise the success of your implants.
Once your mouth is ready to support them, you will undergo a minor surgical procedure so we can insert the implants. Often, we use just two for denture stabilization. They go toward the front of the mouth. They typically have a ball-shaped or bar-shaped attachment that will help to secure your denture in place.
Stabilized dentures are removable, so this procedure should not drastically change your oral hygiene routine.
In some cases, an existing denture can be retrofitted to work with dental implants. Otherwise, you will have to get a new prosthetic.
The Benefits of Denture Stabilization

Denture stabilization with dental implants offers some remarkable benefits:
- Stabilized dentures offer enhanced stability and comfort, reducing the likelihood that your teeth will slip or shift during speaking or eating.
- It will become even easier for you to eat a wide variety of tasty foods.
- Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, so they can help to keep it healthy and whole.
- Since stabilized dentures stimulate the jawbone, they may prevent it from changing shape. Therefore, you may need to get your dentures replaced less often.
- Your speech may sound clearer and more natural.
