What Are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is a thin restoration that only covers the front side of a tooth. Porcelain is used to create them because it resembles enamel to provide natural-looking results. When applied to the front surface of a tooth, a veneer can improve its color, size, and shape. However, the goal of the procedure is to enhance your smile overall. Therefore, veneers are often attached to the teeth that show when a person smiles. By doing so, veneers can resolve various imperfections at once, including:

  • Tooth Decay
  • Chipped or Cracked Teeth
  • Stains or Discoloration
  • Gaps Between Teeth

The Process of Getting Veneers

You'll require a consultation to ensure you're a candidate for veneers. Your dentist may recommend a little prep work before getting started, like a dental cleaning or gum disease treatment. Your teeth and gums must be healthy before getting veneers.

Your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel to ensure your restorations sit flush for the best results. This does not harm the health of your teeth, but your enamel will not grow back if your restorations are removed. Therefore, your teeth must always be covered by veneers or crowns.

Once your teeth have been prepped, your dentist will make an impression of your mouth to send off to the dental lab. They will attach temporary veneers while you wait for the lab to create your restorations and send them back to our office. In a couple of weeks, you'll return to have your permanent veneers bonded in place.

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers continue to rank among the most popular cosmetic procedures because they offer exceptional benefits, including:

  • Look and Feel Natural: Porcelain allows veneers to be thinner than ever before, so your teeth won't feel heavy or bulky. Only a trained dental professional will know that your veneers are not part of your real teeth.
  • Minimally Invasive Procedure: A unique etching method allows the process of getting veneers to be minimally invasive. You'll maintain more of your tooth structure while benefiting from a virtually pain-free procedure.
  • Cost-Effective Solution: You can save time and money because you won't need multiple treatments to address various aesthetic imperfections.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Your veneers can last for 10 years or longer with the right care.

Veneer FAQs

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

Your permanent veneers will be strong enough to withstand most foods. It’s best to avoid anything that’s extremely hard or crunchy though, just to be safe. Darkly pigmented foods and drinks can also stain your veneers over time, and the best way to maintain their pearly white aesthetics is to mitigate your consumption of these types of snacks.

Temporary veneers, on the other hand, aren’t as durable. These are the veneers we’ll place over your teeth until your permanent set is finished being customized. Since temporary veneers are only meant to be a short-term solution, they’re generally made from cheaper materials that can break when you eat things like ice, raw vegetables, and hard candy. Sticky taffies and caramels could also pull your temporary veneers right off!

If you’re not sure what you should and shouldn’t eat with your temporary or permanent veneers, don’t hesitate to give us a call and ask for clarification.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

It depends on your aesthetic goals. The main idea behind veneers is to conceal as many dental blemishes that are visible to onlookers when you smile. Some patients simply want to enhance a single cracked or broken tooth and only need one veneer. Others look for more comprehensive coverage and need as many as 12 veneers in order to achieve a seamless smile.

Rest assured, we’ll let you know how many veneers to expect for your unique treatment when we meet for your consultation.

Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?

Yes – we craft our veneers from high-quality materials that have an incredibly smooth texture. They shouldn’t cause any chaffing and will feel almost exactly like your natural teeth. Many of our patients say that they don’t even notice their cosmetics when eating or speaking.

If your veneers do feel strange or you experience dental sensitivity, please let our team know so we can make adjustments and restore your comfort.

Is It Painful to Get Veneers?

Generally speaking, no. Our team will administer a local anesthetic before removing your enamel or placing your veneers, so your mouth will be quite numb during treatment. After treatment, you may feel a bit sore or experience some sensitivity, but in the vast majority of cases, these are temporary symptoms. Medicine like ibuprofen is often able to manage this type of discomfort.
